Banking & Liquidity
The intelligence behind a well-informed investment ↗
Liquidity has a role within a wider wealth strategy and yet substantial cash can remain in current or call accounts earning little or no return, while other balances may be held at rates or under terms that no longer reflect the purpose, currency or duration of the capital.
Where should liquidity sit, what should it earn, what access does it require and how should the banking relationship support the wider structure?
Liquidity
Operating cash, reserve capital, investment liquidity and longer-term cash holdings serve different purposes. The appropriate account, currency and access requirements can differ accordingly. Reviewing the total cash position can reveal capital that is effectively idle or earning below what its intended role warrants.
Yield & Terms
Interest rates are only one consideration. Tenor, access, minimum balances, currency, deposit terms and the relationship between liquidity and expected expenditure all affect the usefulness of a banking arrangement. The objective is to align the treatment of cash with its purpose and expected time horizon.
Access
Banking relationships capable of supporting substantial balances, multiple currencies, international transfers, investment activity, credit facilities and more complex financial arrangements may be required.
Access to the appropriate institution can become particularly relevant when residency, nationality, domicile or source of wealth limits the obvious choices.
International Banking
A single domestic banking relationship may be insufficient where assets, businesses, property and family members span jurisdictions. Depending on the circumstances, international accounts can provide additional flexibility around currencies, payments, liquidity and geographic diversification, subject to the relevant eligibility and regulatory requirements.
Private Banking
Private banking can extend beyond preferential service. Depending on the institution and client profile, it may provide access to relationship management, bespoke credit, Lombard or asset-backed lending, structured liquidity solutions, investment custody, foreign exchange and broader wealth services. The appropriate relationship depends on what the capital and the wider financial structure require.
Structure & Resilience
Banking relationships also form part of the practical architecture around wealth. Currency exposure, counterparty concentration, access to funds, jurisdiction, account ownership, succession arrangements and the separation of operating and investment liquidity can all warrant consideration when substantial capital is held across borders.
Rather than “Which bank should I use?”, the more useful question is:
Is my banking structure doing what my capital, liquidity and wider financial position require it to do?
That means looking across cash balances, currencies, interest earned, access requirements, counterparties, jurisdictions and anticipated liquidity needs, then identifying where a different banking relationship or structure may be appropriate.
Where specialist regulated or jurisdiction-specific advice is required, we can coordinate the appropriate licensed and regulated adviser or banking relationship for your circumstances at no additional cost. Strategin provides strategic consulting and coordination rather than regulated banking or financial advice.
We bring these considerations together across liquidity, yield, currencies, international banking and private banking access, helping investors and international families assess where capital should be held and which banking capabilities are relevant to the wider strategy.
Because cash has a purpose too. Where it sits, what it earns and how readily it can be deployed all form part of the return on capital.
